CRYPTONIT - FAQ

For how long may I use Cryptonit?

Cryptonit is distributed under the GPLv2 license, which means you can use it when you want and for as long as you want. You can also share it with others and are free to edit the source code as long as your modifications are under the GPL license. For more information, please consult http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html

Does the person I send my files to also require Cryptonit in order to decrypt them?

No. The person may use any PKCS#7 standard-compliant decryption tool. But since Cryptonit is available free of charge, you can suggest he/she downloads Cryptonit and uses it for free.

Do I need to use a PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) to use Cryptonit?

Yes. To use Cryptonit you need a PKCS#12 file that contains both your private key and certificate issued by a trusted Certification Authority. If you do not possess a PKCS#12 file, use the OpenTrust PKI demo to obtain one.

I think I’ve found a bug in Cryptonit: how should I report it?

Please send us an email describing the problem you’ve encountered. Please specify the operating system you’re using, its version,  your version of Cryptonit, and the exact path leading to the bug. Send the information to cryptonit-bugs@lists.idealx.org

Cryptonit isn’t available in my language; what can I do?
